Understanding Piercing Healing Timelines

October 5, 2025

Back to Blog

Piercings look simple, but your body does serious work healing them. Understanding realistic timelines helps you avoid unnecessary worry — or premature jewellery changes.

Earlobes

The most forgiving piercing. Most earlobes heal in six to eight weeks with consistent saline cleaning. Still, wait until a piercer confirms full healing before swapping jewellery on your own.

Cartilage

Helix, conch, tragus, and similar piercings typically need three to six months — sometimes longer. Cartilage has limited blood flow, so patience is essential. Sleeping on the piercing side can slow healing significantly.

Nostril and septum

Nostril piercings often heal in two to four months. Septum piercings can feel healed in six to eight weeks, but full internal healing takes longer. Follow your piercer's aftercare instructions exactly.

Oral piercings

Tongue and lip piercings heal relatively quickly on the surface but require careful hygiene. Avoid alcohol, smoking, and spicy foods during the first two weeks.

Signs of healthy healing

Mild tenderness, slight crusting, and a small amount of clear discharge are normal. Persistent pain, dark discharge, or jewellery embedding into tissue are not — come see us.

Our piercers at every Ontario location use implant-grade jewellery and sterile technique. Book a check-up anytime you are unsure about your healing progress.
