Summer Tattoo Care Tips

June 15, 2026

Back to Blog

Ontario summers are short — we get it, you want to be outside. But UV rays and water activities require extra tattoo awareness, especially during healing.

Fresh tattoos and sun

New tattoos must stay out of direct sunlight entirely until fully healed. Sunburn on a healing tattoo causes blowouts, fading, and extended recovery. Keep it covered with loose clothing if you are outdoors.

Sunscreen on healed work

Once healed, apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every time your tattoo sees daylight. Reapply after swimming or sweating. This single habit preserves colour and line clarity for years.

Swimming restrictions

No pools, lakes, hot tubs, or ocean until your tattoo is fully healed — typically two to four weeks minimum. Bacteria and chlorine irritate open skin and increase infection risk.

Hydration and skin health

Summer heat dries skin out. Moisturized skin holds ink better. Drink water and use unscented lotion on healed tattoos if they feel tight or flaky.

Vacation planning

Got a beach trip booked? Schedule your tattoo at least four to six weeks before departure, or wait until you return. Healing tattoos and all-inclusive resorts do not mix well.

Enjoy the season — just give your ink the respect it deserves. Questions about timing? Call your local Wild Ink studio before booking.
